In a bid to stop the incessant embarrassment caused by some police personnel over the issue of checking the phones of Innocent citizens.
The Edo State Commissioner of Police (CP), Funsho Adegboye has reiterated the ban on such acts as directed by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun.
The Commissioner Of Police, speaking during a meeting with the Command’s strategic security managers, said the directive of Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Inspector-General of Police (IGP), on the ban on searching citizens’ phones while on Patrol, Raid Operations, stop-and-search duties, or other essential duties is still in place.
The IGP has earlier instructed zonal AIGs, Commands, and formations of CPs to monitor their personnel and punish erring officers found searching citizens’ phones while on duty.
In a press statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Chidi Nwabuzor, CP Adegboye warned that Police Officers should not search citizens’ phones in the line of duty.
CP Adegboye, who had served in various capacities at the United Nations Mission in Kosovo, Liberia, East Timor and the African Union Mission in Somalia, said that officers could only be allowed to search citizens’ phones when executing court order from the court of competent jurisdiction as it empowers them to carry out such duties therein in the course of the investigation.
However, he vehemently warns officers and men to desist from this unprofessional conduct of searching phones, and any officer caught doing so will face severe sanctions.
Therefore, he urges the general public to be patient with the police and report any officer who engages in unprofessional conduct through these dedicated telephone numbers.
